Gum Graft Surgery

Gum recession is the loss of gum tissue causing exposure of the root surface. It can be caused by improper brushing technique, poor oral hygiene, grinding of teeth, gum disease, abnormal frenal attachments etc.

To manage the receding gum line, your dentist/surgeon may recommend Gum graft surgery to to increase the thickness of the gum tissue and prevent further gum recession or to cover root surfaces of the teeth that have become exposed.

Although it might sound scary, a variety of gum grafting procedures are routinely performed to manage receding gums. The procedure involves carefully stitching a small amount of new tissue in the area of the gum recession. The tissue used in this procedure most often is taken from the roof of the mouth but may come from a variety of other sources. Your body’s natural recovery process takes over after the grafting procedure is complete and new blood vessels grow into the graft and help it to become integrated with the surrounding tissue.

Who is eligible for Gum Recession treatment?

Gum disease treatments are generally suitable for most patients. Ideally, healthy gum tissue should have a pale pink color, feel firm, and snugly surround the base of each tooth. If your gums do not meet these standards, you may be eligible for gum disease treatments to enhance your oral health. Certain signs that indicate gum disease treatment may be necessary for you include:
  • Gums that are swollen or puffy
  • Gum tissue that appears red or purple
  • Tender gums
  • Gums that easily bleed
  • Unpleasant breath
  • Gum tissue that is receding
