What Is Obstructive Sleep Apnea?
Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a common, serious condition where breathing repeatedly stops and starts during sleep. It happens when the soft tissue at the back of the throat collapses and the tongue relaxes, blocking the airway.
Left untreated, OSA is linked to high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, diabetes, weight gain, memory problems, depression and drowsy-driving accidents.
Common signs
- Loud snoring, or a partner noticing you stop breathing
- Waking up tired, even after a full night
- Morning headaches
- Daytime fatigue, trouble concentrating or remembering
- Struggling to use a CPAP machine
Only a sleep study can confirm sleep apnea. If these sound familiar, a consultation is a good first step.
A Comfortable Alternative to CPAP
A custom oral appliance gently holds your lower jaw and tongue forward while you sleep, keeping your airway open. It is made from impressions of your mouth and worn only at night.
Dr. Desai mainly provides SomnoMed and ProSomnus appliances. Every device is custom-made, FDA-cleared and PDAC-verified, and comes with a 2 to 3 year warranty.

Sleep Apnea Questions
Is snoring always sleep apnea?
No. Many people snore without having sleep apnea, but loud snoring with daytime tiredness is a common warning sign. A sleep study is the only way to know for sure.
Do I need a sleep study first?
Yes. Sleep apnea must be diagnosed by a sleep physician. If you have not had a study, we can refer you for a home sleep test or an in-lab study. If you already have a sleep study completed and a referral from your provider, let us know when you schedule your appointment.
Can an oral appliance replace my CPAP?
For many patients with mild to moderate sleep apnea, or those who cannot tolerate CPAP, an oral appliance is an effective option. Dr. Desai and your physician will decide together what is right for you.
Which oral appliance brands do you offer?
Dr. Desai mainly provides SomnoMed and ProSomnus oral appliances. Every device we use is custom-made, FDA-cleared and PDAC-verified, which Medicare requires for coverage.
Is there a warranty on the devices?
Yes. All our oral appliances come with a 2 to 3 year warranty. Ask our team for the details on your device.
Does insurance cover an oral appliance?
Often, yes. Oral appliance therapy is usually billed to medical insurance, and Medicare may cover it. Our insurance coordinator will check your benefits before treatment.
What is your commitment to transparent pricing?
At SnoozX-AI, we believe healthcare pricing should never be a mystery. There are no hidden fees and no confusing medical jargon. Custom oral appliances for sleep apnea are billed through your medical insurance, not your dental insurance, so we check your benefits and explain your full costs before your device is ever ordered.
Insurance, Medicare and Cost Questions
From our guide Does Insurance or Medicare Cover a Sleep Apnea Mouthguard?
Do you accept Medicare, PPO and HMO plans?
Yes. We accept Medicare and all PPO plans. Your deductible and coinsurance still apply. If you have an HMO plan, talk to our front desk. They will verify your benefits and let you know if your insurance will cover the device.
How much does an oral appliance cost?
If you're using insurance, your costs depend on your plan, copay and deductible, but we'll verify everything with your insurance and let you know what to expect. We believe in 100% payment transparency and will let you know what to expect even before we start treatment.
Do you have self-pay options?
We do. If you're not using insurance, you can still access care with clear, flat-rate pricing.
Can I use an HSA or FSA card?
Yes. HSA and FSA funds may cover oral appliances as eligible expenses. If you have any questions about eligibility, our team is happy to help.
Can I trust the cost estimate?
We believe in 100% financial clarity with all our patients before we start treatment. We base your estimate on information received directly from your insurance plan. If those details aren't fully up to date, the estimate may not be exact. Even after prior authorization, we can never guarantee how your claim pays. Every plan processes claims a little differently, so while we do our best to give you an accurate estimate, we recommend double-checking your coverage with your insurer.
What is a prior authorization?
Oral appliances generally do not need prior authorization when they are medically necessary, but some plans need insurer approval before they are covered. We'll handle that if needed.
What is a copay?
A fixed fee for a visit, depending on your plan.
What is coinsurance?
The percentage of the cost you pay after meeting your deductible.
What is a deductible?
The amount you pay out of pocket each year for healthcare services before your insurance plan begins to pay.
Do I need a referral?
You need a sleep apnea diagnosis and usually an order from your doctor. We can help coordinate this.
Is a snoring guard covered?
Over-the-counter snoring guards are not covered. Coverage applies to custom appliances for diagnosed sleep apnea.
How long does approval take?
It varies by plan. We'll tell you what to expect once we check your benefits.
Can I use financing?
Yes. Monthly payments through several third-party financing vendors are available for any amount your plan doesn't cover, based on approval.
