Am I a Candidate for Dental Implants?

Many people assume they are too old, have too little bone or have the wrong health history for implants. Often that isn't true. Here is what actually decides whether implants are right for you, and how a 3D scan answers the question.

The short answer

Most adults with a missing tooth can get an implant, including many with bone loss or well-controlled diabetes. What matters most is healthy gums, enough bone (or a graft to build it) and good overall health. A 3D CBCT scan shows exactly how much bone you have.

Key takeaways

Do

  • Get a 3D scan before deciding
  • Treat gum disease first
  • Keep diabetes well controlled
  • Tell us every medication you take

Don't

  • Assume bone loss rules you out
  • Wait years after losing a tooth
  • Smoke or vape while healing

What makes someone a good candidate?

Three things matter most:

  • Healthy gums. Gum disease needs to be treated first, because it can also affect implants.
  • Enough bone. The implant needs solid bone to fuse with. If there isn't enough, a graft can often build it up.
  • Good general health. You need to be well enough for a minor surgical procedure and able to heal.

A missing tooth, a failing tooth or a loose denture are all common reasons people come in.

Health conditions and implants

Most conditions don't rule you out, but they can change the plan.

Bone loss

Bone shrinks after a tooth is lost. Many patients with bone loss can still have implants after a bone graft, a sinus lift, or a plan like All-on-X that places implants where the bone is strongest.

Diabetes

Well-controlled diabetes is usually not a barrier. Poorly controlled blood sugar slows healing and raises the risk of infection, so we may ask you to work with your doctor first.

Gum disease

Active gum disease is treated before implant surgery. Dr. Desai has postgraduate training in periodontics, so gum treatment and implant planning happen under one roof.

Smoking and vaping

Smoking reduces blood flow to the gums and is linked to a higher risk of implant problems. Stopping, at least while you heal, gives your implant the best chance.

Medications

Some medicines need extra planning, including certain osteoporosis drugs and blood thinners. Bring a full list of your medications so we can plan safely with your doctor.

Is there an age limit?

There is no upper age limit. What matters is your health, not your birthday. Implants are usually placed once the jaw has finished growing, so they are generally not for children and young teens.

The quickest way to know is a free implant evaluation, including a 3D CBCT scan.

Book a consultation

What if I've worn dentures for years?

Long-term denture wearers often have some bone loss, but many still qualify for snap-on dentures or All-on-X. Compare options in All-on-X vs Dentures.

What happens at the consultation?

Your free implant evaluation has three parts.

Exam

We check your teeth, gums and bite, and talk about your health and goals.

3D CBCT scan

The scan shows your bone height and width, nerves and sinuses, so we know whether you need a graft.

Treatment plan and written quote

You leave with a plan, a timeline and a written price, plus time to decide.

Questions patients ask

How soon after an extraction can I get an implant?

Sometimes the same day. Other times the site needs a few months to heal, often with a graft to preserve the bone. Your scan helps decide.

Will I need a bone graft?

Only if the scan shows the bone is too thin or short. Many grafts are done in the same visit as the extraction or implant.

Can I get implants if I have gum disease?

Yes, once it is treated and under control. We treat the gums first.

Do I need to stop smoking?

It is strongly recommended, at least while the implant heals, because smoking raises the risk of problems.

Is the consultation free?

Yes. Your implant evaluation, including a 3D CBCT scan, is free.

Find out in one visit

You don't have to guess. One free evaluation with a 3D scan tells you whether implants suit you, what you'd need first and what it would cost.
