The short answer

Bonding is quicker and cheaper, done in one visit, but stains and chips more easily. Porcelain veneers cost more but resist stains and usually last longer. The right choice depends on how much you want to change.

Key takeaways

  • Bonding is one visit and lower cost
  • Veneers resist stains and last longer
  • Bonding suits small chips and gaps
  • Veneers suit bigger changes to shape and color

What are bonding and veneers?

Bonding uses tooth-colored composite resin, shaped by hand on the tooth and hardened with a light, usually in one visit. Porcelain veneers are thin custom shells made in a lab and bonded to the front of the teeth over about 2 to 3 visits.

How do they compare?

Monthly estimates range from 48 months at 7.9% APR to 24 months at 0% APR, upon approved credit.

Which is better for chips, gaps, stains or a full makeover?

  • A small chip or a single gap: bonding is often enough.
  • Deep stains that whitening can't lift: veneers usually give a more lasting result.
  • Changing shape, length or color across several teeth: veneers are usually the better choice.

What does each cost?

Porcelain veneers are about $43 to $73 a month per tooth with financing. Bonding costs less per tooth.

How do I care for them?

Brush and floss as usual, keep regular cleanings, and avoid biting hard objects like ice or pens. If you grind at night, a custom nightguard protects both bonding and veneers.

Questions patients ask

Do veneers ruin your teeth?

No. A thin layer of enamel is usually removed so the veneer sits naturally, so the tooth will always need a covering afterwards.

Can bonding be whitened?

No. Whitening doesn't change the color of bonding, so it is best to whiten first and match the bonding to your new shade.

Which looks more natural?

Both can look natural. Porcelain reflects light much like enamel and keeps its shine longer.

Can I switch from bonding to veneers later?

Yes. Many people start with bonding and move to veneers later.
