Dental Bonding vs Veneers: Cost, Lifespan and Looks
Bonding or veneers for chips, gaps or stains? Cost, lifespan and looks compared.
A little soreness or sensitivity after veneers is common. Here is how to ease it at home and when pain is a reason to call your dentist.

The short answer
Mild soreness, gum tenderness and sensitivity to hot and cold are common for a few days after veneers and usually improve within a week or two. Over-the-counter pain relievers, cold compresses, saltwater rinses and soft foods help. Call your dentist if the pain is severe, gets worse, or your bite feels uneven.
Dental veneers are a popular way to get a beautiful smile. These thin shells of porcelain or composite resin are custom-made to cover the front of the teeth and correct their appearance. The procedure is generally safe and effective, but some patients have discomfort afterward. Here is how to handle it.
Veneers can address a range of cosmetic concerns:
Getting veneers usually involves a consultation, preparing the teeth, taking impressions or a scan, making the veneers and bonding them in place. The procedure is minimally invasive, but some discomfort during recovery is normal.
If the pain is significant, call your dentist. They can find the cause and recommend the right treatment. A bite that feels uneven is a common, easy-to-fix cause of soreness.
Ibuprofen or acetaminophen can relieve mild to moderate discomfort. Follow the dosage on the label.
Wrap a few ice cubes in a cloth and hold it against your cheek for 10 to 15 minutes at a time, with breaks in between, to reduce inflammation and numb the area.
Skip hard, crunchy or chewy foods that take a lot of biting force. Stick to soft foods such as yogurt, mashed potatoes, soup and smoothies until the pain eases.
Keep brushing and flossing to help your gums heal after getting dental veneers. Be gentle around the gum line and avoid pressing hard on the veneered teeth.
Mix a teaspoon of salt into a glass of warm water and swish for 30 to 60 seconds. Repeat a few times a day to soothe the gums.
Your dentist will give you specific instructions, which may include foods to avoid, medication and follow-up visits. Following them helps your recovery go smoothly.
Some discomfort and sensitivity are normal in the first days. Most should improve within a week or two as your mouth adjusts. If symptoms continue or get worse, see your dentist.
