Strong Gag Reflex at the Dentist: What Actually Helps
Practical tips for a sensitive gag reflex, and how digital scans help.
If the dentist makes you anxious, you are far from alone, and you don't have to push through it. Here is how we help nervous patients feel comfortable, with or without sedation.

The short answer
Many adults feel nervous about the dentist, and you don't have to push through it. Options range from gentle, slower appointments to oral sedation that leaves you relaxed and drowsy. We'll talk through what suits you before any treatment.
Fear often comes from a painful past visit, a strong gag reflex, the sounds and smells of a dental office, or feeling out of control lying back in the chair. Embarrassment about not having been in a while can add to it. All of these are understandable, and all of them can be managed.
Small changes make a big difference for many patients.
We tell you what we're about to do before we do it, so there are no surprises.
We agree on a hand signal before we start. Raise it and we stop.
A topical gel numbs the surface first, so the injection is much more comfortable.
Treatment can be split into shorter visits if long appointments feel like too much.
For longer treatment or stronger anxiety, sedation can help.
A prescribed tablet taken before your visit helps you feel relaxed and drowsy. You stay able to respond, and many people remember little of the appointment. You need someone to drive you home.
Tell us you're nervous when you book. We'll plan around it.
Book a consultationOral sedation is widely used in dentistry. It is the perfect solution for anxious patients for any treatment, from cleanings to extractions to All-on-X, and it's perfectly safe because our doctors never exceed the recommended safe dose of the medication. Before your visit, we review your health history and medications, plan with your doctor if needed, and monitor you throughout. Tell us about every medicine you take, including supplements.
Our team understands that dentistry can be stressful. Many patients come after a long gap. The first visit is about understanding where things stand and making a plan you're comfortable with.
